What Does the One Big Beautiful Bill Mean for Solar in SLO County?

The One Big Beautiful Bill is now law, and it’s a major turning point for solar energy in San Luis Obispo and across the United States. Signed on July 4, 2025, the bill brings sweeping changes to residential and commercial solar.

For property and business owners on the Central Coast, that means new deadlines and tighter rules. But it’s also a powerful incentive to take full advantage of federal solar tax credits and financing options before the changes take effect.

As your trusted, local solar provider, A.M. Sun Solar + Roofing is here to help you make the most of this opportunity.

What Are The New Rules?

The One Big Beautiful Bill shortens timelines and tightens eligibility for key solar incentives. Here’s what you need to know:

  • The Investment Tax Credit (ITC) for residential solar ends early. To qualify for the residential solar and battery tax credit, the expenditure must be made by December 31, 2025.
  • Commercial projects must begin construction within 60 days of the bill’s enactment, Sept. 2, 2025, and be completed by 2028 to qualify.
  • Leased systems and power purchase agreements (PPAs) still qualify for the ITC if installed after the bill was signed but they go to the finance company.
  • Energy storage tax credits remain for commercial installations, which will allow for retrofits or battery-only systems via a lease arrangement on the battery.
  • Foreign Entities of Concern (FEOC) restrictions take effect on January 1, 2026, reducing the solar components linked to China and potentially raising material costs.
  • Transferability of tax credits is more limited, impacting project financing.
  • Section 25D, which helps homeowners access tax savings, is being scaled back.

What This Means for You

For residents and business owners in San Luis Obispo County, this legislation makes timing more important than ever.

If you’re planning to go solar—or already have a lease or an agreement in place—now is the time to move forward. Projects that begin soon can still take advantage of current tax incentives, pricing, and equipment availability.

The sooner you act, the more options and savings you’ll preserve.

What You Can Do Right Now

We encourage you to take the following steps before critical deadlines hit:

  • Start your solar installation before December 2025 to secure the full Investment Tax Credit.
  • Finalize your lease or PPA agreement if you’re considering one, before restrictions fully take effect.
  • Review your system design and materials to ensure they comply with upcoming FEOC rules.
  • Talk to an A.M. Sun Solar + Roofing representative to understand how these changes apply to your unique situation.
