Act Fast: Your Solar Tax Incentives May Be Going Away

At A.M. Sun Solar + Roofing, we’ve always believed in empowering homeowners with clean, reliable energy. But a recent piece of legislation coming out of Washington could change the game for residential and commercial solar—and not in a good way.

On May 22, the House passed the “One Big Beautiful Bill” reconciliation package. While the name might sound charming, the bill poses a serious threat to the future of solar in America. And unless the Senate steps in, the consequences of this bill will be far reaching.

What’s in the Bill?

The legislation includes a number of provisions that would make it much harder—and more expensive—for homeowners and business owners to go solar. Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • The Investment Tax Credit (ITC), which currently helps make solar more affordable, would expire early. Residential projects would need to be installed before December 2025 to qualify. Non-residential projects would have to begin construction within 60 days of enactment of the bill and be completed by 2028 to qualify.
  • Leased systems and PPAs (power purchase agreements) would no longer qualify for the ITC if they are sold after the bill is signed. That change kicks in immediately—even for some systems that are already installed.
  • The Foreign Entities of Concern (FEOC) restrictions would kick in by January 1, 2026, banning any solar system materials linked to China.
  • Transferability of tax credits would be further limited, creating cash flow issues for developers and shrinking financing options.
  • Section 25D, which helps individual homeowners, would also be weakened—making it harder for many families to go solar.

Why This Matters

In plain terms: this bill would shrink access to solar, especially for homeowners and business owners who rely on leases or PPAs to get started. It would also put thousands of clean energy jobs at risk and destabilize the local project pipeline we’ve worked so hard to build.

  • Property owners may be rushed to install systems this year to beat the deadline.
  • Financing models could disappear, leaving fewer affordable options.
  • Clean energy growth could stall at a time when we need it most—for jobs, for the grid, and for our planet.

What Can You Do?

Thankfully, this bill isn’t law yet. The Senate still needs to vote, which means they need to hear from you—the business owners, workers, and homeowners who know the value of solar firsthand.
