- About 17 Strong
Ryan Teixeira was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma at age 18, just months after signing a baseball scholarship with Colorado Mesa University. His dreams were put on hold to fight for his life. While in the hospital for intensive chemotherapy, Ryan’s nurse navigator explored wish-granting opportunities for him. He began planning a trip, which served as a distraction while he endured treatment. But he was left heart-broken when he heard that, due to his age, he didn’t qualify for most organizations.Ryan had surgery to remove a large tumor in his right leg in August 2015. He came out of surgery with the idea to start the 17 Strong Foundation, granting “Victory Trips” to young adults like himself who are often in the forgotten age group. From his hospital bed, Ryan outlined and drafted our organization and its mission. To learn more about 17Strong and Ryan's story, visit 17Strong.org.
